Binaries are binaries. SMIT (actually installp) simply ensures
that you have the proper pre-requisites (AIX header files installed, AIX
libraries installed, etc.).

If you untar the file into the proper directory (not just anywhere
on your system) and include GCC in your PATH, it should work. If it does
not work, make sure that you have the other AIX filesets installed for
application development.

If you have any further questions, please ask them publically, not
privately to me.

Those are pre-built binaries (and libraries) packaged in a tar
file. There is no "configure" file because one simply untars the file
directly into the filesystem. It is not a source distribution, it is a
pre-built binary distribution for AIX. One configures and builds GCC from
a source ditsribution, not from a binary distribution.

I do not understand what you are expecting and what is confusing
you. Maybe someone else on the gcc-help mailinglist can explain it better.

David

P.S. Bull does not appear to have a version of GCC 3.0.4
available.

The binary distribution is pre-built, meaning that it has been
configured and compiled for AIX. It should be a snapshot of the files
installed by GCC so that it can be installed on another system.

I believe that UCLA repository distributes tar files and the
Groupe Bull repository distributes AIX installp-format (SMIT) files. UCLA
also mirrors the Groupe Bull website with a link at the bottom-left side
column on the UCLA welcome page.

The binary distribution will not contain a file named "configure"
because that distribution is pre-built, ready to install and run. If you
want to install GCC 3.0.4 and downloaded a binary distribution of GCC
3.0.4, why do you want to build it?
