boostrapping for gcc 3.4 on Linux fails

Hi,

I tried to build gcc 3.4 in the same
way as it was succesful with all
previous versions, but boostrapping fails
with

ar rc libiberty.a \

which doesn't astonish me, since neither regex.o nor any
of the other files has been built yet, so imho it should fail?!?!

Below I have copied the whole process (with the output --- hope it's
not too much). The version of gcc used for compilation is
