Dennis,

Thanks for your reply. Actually I didn't have any problem building it
(gmaking it). I had problem when I gmake install it. I'll try your
two suggestions and see if that helps but it's going to take another
6+ hours before I can see any result. I'll let you know, thanks!

Two thoughts cross my mind :

  (1) try to restrict the language options first and see if you get a
      clean build that way.

  (2) install Sun Studio 12 compiler and try to build with that

let me do some thinking for you .. I have built GCC on Solaris many times (
on Solaris 2.5.1 upwards ) and I seem to always run into some problem along
the way or the testsuite results are shoddy or something.

I am sure we can muddle through it.

Dennis

Gentle People:

Snipped from the bottom of this post:
"or the test suite results are shoddy or something."

When we build gcc is it really necessary to run the test suite?
When we run the test suite are we testing for build bugs or
some type of traditional source code bugs?

Are their build bugs which are not reported as obvious errors?

I would want to verify that my build works as expected, by comparing
with results reported by others. Also, when I am building for an
infrequently reported target, I post results in the hope that someone
will make use of them, either for fixes, to verify their own builds, or
to inform me of improvements.
Lately, I have chosen not to incorporate known fixes (mostly for
testsuite bugs on secondary targets) which aren't accepted into
mainline, assuming that others will build the same way, should they
choose to compare.

Andrea,

Yes, it does have the install-sh script. As I managed in another
email, I managed to solve the problem by disabling the support for
Fortran so that it doesn't try to install the libf2c library. Thanks
for your reply!

Dennis,

I solved my problem. As you advised, I just disabled the support for
Fortran so it didn't try to install the library libf2c and I didn't
get any error when I did gmake install. Thanks so much for your help!

Does the top-level srcdir contain install-sh, or not?

Andrew.

Oh trust me .. I can sooo relate to that. :-P

  I build GCC 4.2.1 on a Sparc 20 :
  http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/2007-08/msg00185.html

The process took days .. and days and coffee pots

So, what was your configure line again ? Did you specify --prefix as well
as --with-local-prefix ??

Here is the configure options that I used on that Sparc20 :

bash-3.2$ gcc -v
Using built-in specs.
Target: sparc-sun-solaris2.8
Configured with: /export/home/dclarke/build/gcc-4.2.1/configure
--with-as=/usr/ccs/bin/as --without-gnu-ld --with-ld=/usr/ccs/bin/ld
--with-cpu=v7 --enable-threads=posix --disable-nls
--prefix=/export/home/dclarke/local
--with-local-prefix=/export/home/dclarke/local --enable-shared
--enable-languages=c,c++,objc,fortran
--with-gmp=/export/home/dclarke/local
--with-mpfr=/export/home/dclarke/local --enable-bootstrap
Thread model: posix
gcc version 4.2.1

  ugly eh ?

Dennis

Hi,

I'm trying to install GCC 3.4.6 on my Solaris 10 machine. When I ran gmake
install, I got the following error message:

../../../gcc-3.4.6/libf2c/../install-sh -c .libs/libg2c.so.0.0.0
/usr/local/gcc-3.4.6/lib/sparcv9/libg2c.so.0.0.0

gmake[1]: Leaving directory
`/space/local_bin/compile/objdir/sparc-sun-solaris2.10/libf2c'
gmake: *** [install-target-libf2c] Error 2

I'm using the GCC 4.2.2 and GNU Make 3.81 to do the compilation and my
configure statement looks like this:

../gcc-3.4.6/configure --prefix=/usr/local/gcc-3.4.6
--with-as=/usr/ccs/bin/as --with-ld=/usr/ccs/bin/ld
--with-libiconv-prefix=/usr/local/libiconv-1.11 --disable-nls

I didn't get any error message when run gmake. I'm really stuck now so any
help/hint is much appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Regards,
Alex
