gcc3.2 installation problem on Solaris 2.8, libgcc.map format problem

I'm getting the following error message from GNU ld version 2.13 when doing
a make of gcc3.2 on Solaris 2.8:

/usr/local/sparc-sun-solaris2.8/bin/ld:libgcc/./libgcc.map: file format not
recognized; treating as linker script
/usr/local/sparc-sun-solaris2.8/bin/ld:libgcc/./libgcc.map:1: parse error
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

I have all the latest Solaris patches applied.  My path is
PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin.  Here are other relevant version numbers:

	binutils version 2.13 
	gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 
	GNU Make version 3.79.1
