Sorry, my mistake. I didn't log in as root.
An additional problem:
I ran ./configure and got the output below:
Of note is the end of the script ("no configuration info in gas"). Is this a
problem?
Also, when do I get my "as" file. This is what I am after specifically. After
running my ./configure script I didn't get any
new file produced.
Thanks in advance

Subject: Problems installing 'binutils'
I downloaded the 'binutils' files, and have "gzip -d" it and then "tar -xvf" it.
After doing this the README file indicates that one must:
a) setenv CC gcc
b) ./configure
for .csh
When I run ./configure, I get the following error messages:
Configuring for a sparc-sun-solaris2.8 host.
touch: config.junk cannot create
mv: cannot access config.junk
*** cannot find move-if-change.
I cannot find config.junk, but the move-if-change file definitely exists.
Do I need to run the configure script in /usr/ccs/bin/ ?
Thanks
Kabir

It's seems that you are using a non-gnu 'as'. Suggest you downloading gnu
'binutils',
install it and make sure the correct 'as' is used ( the simplest way is rm
/usr/ccs/bin/as :-) ).

From your output from configure,

and

it looks like you should now have a Makefile in the directory you hut
configured. Now
make
should build the executables for as, ld, and the oher utilities, while
make install
should put them where you specified to configure (defualt /usr/local/bin).

I managed to get the ./configure script to work ok.
Next I need to run make I guess(????)
I did this and got the following errors:

How do I build an assembler, without getting the above errors?
Your help would be appreciated

I'm actually clueless regarding binutils. On Linux they work fine, so I've
never needed to look much into them.
So, from now on, I'll be guessing.
The "assembler can't assemble the output from gcc" began after you upgraded
to gcc 3.0. The old compiler worked fine.
A solution would be to try to build binutils with the old (Sun ?) compiler.
Then you should reconfigure (--with.gnu-as --with-as="..." --with-gnu-ls
--with-ld="...") and rebuild (make bootstrap, make install) gcc to use the
new tools.
I can't come with an easier solution, maybe somebody else, with more
knowledge about binutils and the Sun tool chain will.
I hope this will be useful,

I cannot find config.junk, but the move-if-change file definitely exists.
Do I need to run the configure script in /usr/ccs/bin/ ?
Thanks
