i tried to update my binutils - and it works so far as i am compiling as a
user and not as root.
for example if i am compiling as user the new ld - version is used, and that
is OK. but if i try to make fe. a 'make install' the old ld version is
used - and this is not okay.

silly as i am - i deinstalled the old binutils version via my distri - but
the result is i couldn't even make a 'make' for the new version.

can anyone help on this problem - ho to disable the old binutil version

i am using
SUSE 8.1
gcc 3.3.2
old binutil version : GNU ld version 2.11.92.0.10 20011021 (SuSE)
new binutil version : GNU ld version 2.14 20030612

thanks a lot

sepp

How did you update your binutils? It sounds like you installed a second copy rather than updating them, and that the path they're in happens to come first in your PATH when you're logged in as a user, and not as root... If that's the case, then to build as root, you would need to place the directory that your new binutils are in at the beginning of you PATH before trying to build.

Cheers,
Lyle
