I don't think your questions have much to do with gcc.
    Why don't you search:
    http://ltp.sourceforge.net/coverage/gcov-kernel.php 
    for an appropriate forum. Maybe the people who wrote it can answer
    your questions.

I would be very surprised to hear of a kernel patch which was not
    specific to a particular OS. Kernel code is the most OS-specific
    part of an OS.
