Hello, gentle maintainer. This is a message from the Translation
Project robot.
A new PO Template file, for programs using the textual domain `gcc',
has just been made available to language teams for translation, and a
copy is available as:
The file should soon be made available in mirror sites as:
> ftp://ftp.unex.es/pub/gnu-i18n/po/domains/POT/gcc-3.1.1.pot
> ftp://tiger.informatik.hu-berlin.de/pub/po/domains/POT/gcc-3.1.1.pot
In your releases, this file is usually found as `po/gcc.pot'. It is
created or updated automatically at `make dist' time, or whenever you
run `make update-po' in the `po/' subdirectory. Whenever you have a
distribution ready which holds a newer PO Template, please send the URL
of this distribution to the address below. The distribution could be
a pretest or a snapshot, it does not even have to compile. This is to
be used by translators, when they need to get some translation context
from your sources.
Within the Translation Project, each PO Template file should have
different version numbers, but since it is not OK to have two different
distributions having same version numbers, this is not a problem in
practice.
Here is the URL information which has just been provided to translators for
your package. Please inform the translation coordinator, at the address
given below, if the information does not appear to be adequate or current:
> ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/gcc/gcc-3.1.1/gcc-3.1.1.tar.gz
Translated PO files will later be automatically e-mailed to you.
Thanks for your collaboration,
The Translation Project robot, in the
name of your kind translation coordinator.

I have committed the merged gcc and cpplib .po files to mainline. OK to
commit to 4.0 branch?
A spot check shows the message of bug 21364 is now properly marked fuzzy.

The URL doesn't seem to have been properly updated to be that of the
prerelease submitted (although that for cpplib has been).

We also need support in diagnostic.c for %1$d etc. formats. They are now
used in some of the message catalogs - reasonably enough, as the standard
(Single Unix Specification) method of handling reordering arguments in
formats - without support in the code for doing so.
To detect format defects, try disabling the testsuite code forcing the
locale to C and run the testsuite in a different locale, looking not for
testcase failures which all diagnostics will produce, but for compiler
crashes that don't happen in the C locale? Far from a perfect test, but
it should find some problems which can be reported to the language teams.

Indeed. My personal impression is that a few untranslated messages
won't bother anybody. Instead, gcc translations are still in a state
where only few teams have started translating the catalog, and even
fewer had ever completed the catalog (especially since the catalog
kept significantly growing for quite some time).
So I propose that, for a foreseeable future, gcc translations focus on
a single branch, which would be the 3.3 branch at the
moment. Translators can improve the translations as they find time,
and the GCC team produces releases when they see the need and find the
time.
Any tighter integration is IMO unnecessary. If there were n+1 catalogs
per 3.x branch (one prerelease, one catalog per released subminor),
translators will keep being reminded that work needs to be done.
A bigger concern, to me, is the quality of the translations. As gcc is
such a huge thing, many translations will be incorrect. It would be
good if more automatic checks could be added somehow, e.g. for the
proprietary printf directives used in error functions. I know that
Debian had to remove the entire French catalog because it could make
the compiler crash. If anybody could provide code that performs checks
beyond the checks that msgfmt performs, I'd happily integrate it with
the TP robot, so that translations get rejected by the TP already.

Martin

Now that I have the real 3.3 branch I'm going to do all that, including
checking in a regenerated gcc.pot on mainline.

Hmm, I'll check with the TP maintainers how best to solve this.

The 3.3 branch has been around since December. The 3.3.1 release will in
due course be made from the 3.3 branch (date not announced, but probably
around 14 July); it is currently open for documentation (including .po
files) and regression patches.
(The .po files should be updated on mainline as well - including some
which Mark updated on the 3.3 branch only, just before the release. It
may be time for another gcc.pot regeneration on mainline as well.)
It is desirable for new .po files to get checked in on mainline and the
appropriate release branch as soon as they are sent to gcc-patches; it
saves the Release Manager from needing to make such checkins at the last
minute, as well as meaning people using snapshots and prereleases get
better translations.
> And regarding 3.2.3, that branch is closed, so how would I go about updating
> files for it?
You don't - distributors can always add the 3.2.3 .po files to their
redistributions of GCC if they want, but they don't really correspond to
3.2.3 as the gcc.pot file on the 3.2 branch wasn't regenerated for 3.2.3
or even for a long time before then.

A release is a release - the file versions in it are fixed for eternity
once the release is made and form a stable basis for diffs towards the
next release; any other way (having more than one version of a file
purporting to be a particular release) lies madness and the impossibility
of using diffs reliably. As soon as a release is made, the branch is
opened for the next point release (unless there are to be no more point
releases from that branch) and updated .po files can go in.
We now have the Release Manager regenerating gcc.pot and checking for new
.po files immediately before making a release, which is progress. There
should not be many significant diagnostic changes on a release branch,
especially not after a release has been made from it, so if the
translators are active in updating translations when a snapshot from the
release branch is submitted (as was done early on the 3.3 branch) and then
after releases are made, the translations in 3.3.1 or 3.3.2 can be a very
close match to the messages in that version.
It would be possible to regenerate gcc.pot automatically before each
snapshot (Zack had a script to do this, but more work was needed). But
we've been told that the Translation Project does not want automatic
weekly submission of new .pot files for snapshots, so for this to be
useful in keeping translations up to date, translators would need to
interact with GCC some other way.

I wanted to update de.po, da.po, es.po and tr.po for 3.3, but as there is no
3.3 branch yet, how am I going to update the po files? The only chance I
currently see would be to update mainline and then update the respective
3.3.X branch if it ever gets created.
And regarding 3.2.3, that branch is closed, so how would I go about updating
files for it?
This seems to always be a problem for gcc. To get distributed, the
translations have to come in before the release, i.e. be done against a
snapshot or prerelease version. Once a version has been released, there is
no way to update that release version until an update branch is opened.

Hello, gentle maintainer. This is a message from the Translation
Project robot.
A new PO Template file, for programs using the textual domain `gcc',
has just been made available to language teams for translation, and a
copy is available as:

Translated PO files will later be automatically e-mailed to you.
Thanks for your collaboration,

They will also find that gcc.pot hasn't been regenerated on the 3.2 branch
for ages, nor have the .po files on 3.2 branch been updated from the TP
site for ages (as the GCC i18n maintainer hasn't lately been committing
the files when they are sent to gcc-patches, and no-one else feels it's
their regular responsibility to do so).
The documentation for how to make GCC releases
<http://gcc.gnu.org/releasing.html> and branches
<http://gcc.gnu.org/branching.html> now explains what the Release Manager
should do to ensure that translations are up to date, but this is a recent
addition to that documentation. In principle .po files will get updated
on the release branches from the most recent files for that branch at
<http://www2.iro.umontreal.ca/~pinard/po/registry.cgi?domain=gcc>, but
making a release is an error-prone 18-step process at present and the .pot
regeneration and .po file updating needs to be remembered before the
release script is run.

gcc.pot hasn't been regenerated on the 3.3 branch since the 2002-12-30
snapshot (nor have the .po files, mainline or branch, been updated since I
last did so in February, though new versions of various .po files have
appeared since then).

I'd presumed (when writing <http://gcc.gnu.org/translation.html> in the
hope it would encourage gcc.pot and the .po files to be kept more up to
date in GCC CVS, and maintainers to understand how to deal with bug
reports about translations) that it was automated (and possibly linked to
the process updating <http://www.gnu.org/server/new-software.html>), since
I wasn't submitting the releases, and I didn't think Zack or the i18n
maintainer would have been given the lack of recent gcc.pot regeneration
on the 3.2 branch, and I'm sure no other GCC maintainer would have been
submitting releases to the TP site.

Oops, this is inconsistently. Probably I shouldn't have posted 3.2.3
;-(

Yes and no. In general it's useful to let translators update and even
add new translations for 3.2.x because then (GNU)/Linux distributors can
pick up translations matching 3.2.x; some of them care about this
posibility and that's why I always want the stable releases present at
the TP site.
Of course, I didn't want to mess up with the devel branch. I would
have been better to assign a separate textdomain to gcc 3.2.x in the
first place (e.g., gcc_3_2).

Maybe you can provide a 3.3 snapshot? I guess, it would be the easiest
to install gcc-3.3-b20030428.pot for translation purposes.

It appears that at
http://www2.iro.umontreal.ca/~pinard/po/registry.cgi?domain=gcc
this URL for the 3.2.3 release has replaced the URL for the 3.3 snapshot.
However, the page still correctly says that
The current template for this domain is gcc-3.3-b20021230.pot
but no longer provides the URL to the snapshot corresponding to that .pot
file.
Since there will be no more releases from the 3.2 branch, continued
translation effort for 3.2.x isn't particularly useful, and it would be
more appropriate for the URL given on that page to be that for the 3.3
snapshot that was previously there.
(The 3.2.3 release was submitted by some automated process that submits
new GNU releases.)

Hello, gentle maintainer. This is a message from the Translation
Project robot.
A new PO Template file, for programs using the textual domain `gcc',
has just been made available to language teams for translation, and a
copy is available as:
The file should soon be made available in mirror sites as:
> ftp://ftp.unex.es/pub/gnu-i18n/po/domains/POT/gcc-3.2.3.pot
> http://translation.sf.net/domains/POT/gcc-3.2.3.pot
> ftp://tiger.informatik.hu-berlin.de/pub/po/domains/POT/gcc-3.2.3.pot

Yes, you're right. I'll mail to translation to rename the .pot file.

Won't this version number cause ordering problems later, by being
considered as later than 3.1? The previous snapshot one I specifically
named as gcc-3.1-b20011219.pot because the docs
http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/contrib/po/HTML/maintainers.html
state the ordering as
In your distribution, the POT file is probably named
po/PACKAGE.pot, where PACKAGE is the name of your package.
Within the Translation Project, your POT file is named
DOMAIN-VERSION.pot. DOMAIN is the textual domain for your
package, often the same as PACKAGE, but surely, all in lower
case, and with gnu or g prefixes removed. VERSION may have
one of the forms N.M, N.M.O, or N.M-bO, using all numbers, or
N.ML, where L is a lower case letter. (I should check this
more closely.) The Translation Project needs being able to
compare two VERSION and decides how to order them. N.M comes
before any N.M.O or N.ML, but after any N.M-bO. N, M and O
are compared by their numerical value, and L is compared
lexicographically. If for some reason, you just cannot use
any of the above schemes, please discuss this with the
translation coordinator, so the Translation Project might
have to be adjusted for your package.
which indicates that VERSION-bDATE is the right format for snapshot .pot
files, not just DATE.
