     The release notes for GCC at http://gcc.gnu.org/install/specific.html#mips-sgi-irix6
     say the following:
     
     "The --enable-threads option doesn't currently work, 
     a patch is in preparation for a future release."
     
     I don't know what the status of the patch is, but
     basically --enable-threads option does not work on IRIX.
