 Sorry for the late reply: I was on vacation and just got back to this.
 
 In any case, I had problems building the new version of gcc (3.0.2)
 which seemed to go away while playing with various configuration
 switches and stuff.  In any case, the successful build gives me a
 version of gcc 3.0.2 that still gives the same error message on the
 same file.  Note that as ever the problem occurs only with the -O
 switch. 
 
 I will provide more details once I figure out what is going on (I have
 to do this configuration business systematically to see what was wrong
 the first time I tried to build gcc etc).  Maybe it has something to
 do with solaris 2.8 or something.
 
 This email is just a request not to close the problem report yet.  I
 will need some free time to provide more info.
