    You need to use GCC 3.1 and up.
    Using -mtune=ultrasparc is the safest.
    
    If you want to use -mcpu=v9, then you need to pass
    the assembler -xarch=v9a.
    So you need to do something like:
    gcc -Wa,-xarch=v9a
