I remember this. This is a bug in libc's sscanf and extreme | input. You'll have to talk to Sun. Speaking as someone not contributing anything to the IO stuff: This problem is a problem in our library (using C++ IOstreams), is it acceptable to tell people it is Sun's problem? -- Gaby
