Is there any reason why you did not close the PR? The problem seems to be fixed in gcc 3.1 as well as in mainline (gcc 3.2 20020610). By the way, the link for the new testcase http://gcc.gnu.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/gcc/gcc/testsuite/g++.dg/opt/nrv3.C.diff?cvsroot=gcc&r1=NONE&r2=1.1 doesn't work (at least not for me).
