I tried to recompile gcc-3.1.1, which I had successfully previously built on
sparc solaris 5.7 (same platform as the reported bug).

While building, I got the same error, i.e.
checking for ANSI C header files... no
 checking for uintptr_t... yes
 checking whether the C compiler
 (/opt/electra/jdeifik/gnu/build-gcc-3.1.1/gcc/xgcc
 -B/opt/electra/jdeifik/gnu/build-gcc-3.1.1/gcc/
 -B/home/jdeifik/sparc-sun-solaris2.7/bin/
 -B/home/jdeifik/sparc-sun-solaris2.7/lib/ -isystem
 /home/jdeifik/sparc-sun-solaris2.7/include -m64 -g -O2 ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler
 cannot create executables.
 make[1]: *** [configure-target-libiberty] Error 1
 make[1]: Leaving directory `/opt/electra/jdeifik/gnu/build-gcc-3.1.1'
 make: *** [bootstrap] Error 2

Needless to say, this error is baffling to me.
Again, there is no directory /home/jdeifik/sparc-sun-solaris-2.7
 Again, I did configure as ../gcc-3.1.1/configure --prefix=/home/jdeifik

     thanks,
     jeff deifik
