For GCC 2.96 (which is not an FSF release), the program works as expected if calloc is declared by including <stdlib.h>. GCC 3.2, the current release, reports an error for an "invalid conversion from `int (*)(int, int)' to `const void*"; a function pointer on IA-64 is not a simple pointer as it is on some other architectures. http://gcc.gnu.org/cgi-bin/gnatsweb.pl?cmd=view%20audit-trail&database=gcc&pr=7349
