 I looked at this a little tonight.
 
 The proximate cause is that we are generating a RETURN_EXPR whose
 argument is not a MODIFY_EXPR setting the RESULT_DECL.  We do this in
 maybe_build_thisn_access_method.
 
 Based on some preliminary debugging it looks like patch_return isn't
 being run for the RETURN_EXPR in question.  patch_return is what
 builds the MODIFY_EXPR in ordinary circumstances.
