Here's the fix, committed on the mainline and branch after testing on
i686-pc-linux-gnu. (I tested that particular program with a cross
compiler.)
This was another ASM_OUT_EXTERNAL problem, FYI. Unfortunately,
assemble_external triggers the creation of DECL_RTL, which is probably a
design bug, but never-the-less a fact.
Please confirm that this fixes the problem for you and close the PR.
