Another partial solution may be to move people that contribute code to
the front of the list. Think of it as a reward for contributing. I'm
not sure if this will really help those people or not... but my guess
is it will.

Actually, this does very little to improve the situation.

As long as the list server is unable to keep up, it will only help for the
first message sent to the list after you move them to the front of the list.
Then everything will be back to normal.

The decision (and timeframe) isn't up to me. The mailserver is run
by Cygnus's sysadmin folks, so all I can do is make suggestions and
ask questions :-)

If someone wants to volunteer to do some exploding for the lists I'm
game. Particularly for non-US sites since they represent this biggest
problems for our mail system.

An alternative[1] (used successfuly by the high-volume linux mailing lists)
is to use external exploders based on TLDs (e.g. one for Europe, one for
.com etc.). Maybe someone would volunteer to run such a exploder.

[1] Actually they don't use sendmail of course, but zmailer, but the splitting
over exploders helps a lot too.

It's just the way things are. Our mailserver handles several large
lists.

We could make the turnaround time faster, but attempts to do so make
things *much* worse when traffic is higher than normal as the mailserver
will fall further and further behind.

Long term we'll probably drop sendmail and use a more list efficient
mailer, but until then (an that may be a long time) the list will
probably continue to have a relatively long latency.

Heya,

sometimes it takes over 24 hours before a post to this list
makes it back to me. Why is this list so slow? It isn't
moderated is it? :)
An advantage might be that it reduces the traffic on the
list, but a disadvantage is a very slow feedback, sometimes
leading to extra (double) work being done.
