"Yes" to which question?  There are two questions in my message
which are mutually exclusive.

I can imply the right answer from the rest of your message, but
being explicit with your answers will save both of us time and
potential confusion.

Based on the rest of your message the answer is "yes, there has
been something in the standard gcc releases to do this".

How long has this been true?  This is more a curiousity on my
part.

Well, I still think it's the wrong thing to do, but if Richard
Henderson or someone else familiar with linux sez it's OK, then
I'll go ahead and install the changes.
