cvs/egcs won't build on alpha (fwd)

Not exactly sure of the relationship between egcs-bugs@cygnus.com
and egcs@cygnus.com, so I decided to forward the problem I was
having here as well (I'm on the egcs@cygnus.com list.

Okay in general my environment is an alpha running redhat-5.0, with patches.
I compiled and installed egcs-1.0.2 (make bootstrap) with no problems..

I installed autoconf-980211 and automake-980213 and 
binutils-2.8.1.0.30-alpha.bin.tar.gz..

[root@freesurface egcs]# as --version
GNU assembler 980407 (binutils-2.8.1.0.30-alpha.bin.tar.gz)

[root@freesurface egcs]# ld --version
GNU ld 2.9 (binutils-2.8.1.0.30-alpha.bin.tar.gz)

[root@freesurface /root]# gcc --version
egcs-2.90.27 980315 (egcs-1.0.2 release)    

When trying to compile the newest CVS egcs tree:
/usr/local/src/egcs/gcc/xgcc -B/usr/local/src/egcs/gcc/ -O2   -DIN_GCC    -g -O2 -I./include  -fPIC -g1  -DIN_LIBGCC2 -D__GCC_FLOAT_NOT_NEEDED -fexceptions   -I. -I. -I./config \
  -c ./cp/new2.cc -DL_op_vnew -o opvnew.o
./cp/new2.cc:37: Internal compiler error 374.
./cp/new2.cc:37: Please submit a full bug report to `egcs-bugs@cygnus.com'.

I reinstalled gcc-2.7.2.3 from the redhat cdrom, and deleted /usr/local/bin
from the path (where egcs-1.0.2) is and the same thing happens.

Any ideas?  

P.S.  Oh btw it's an ev56 cpu (533Mhz)
