I downloaded bzip2 and the full version of egcs.bz2. I have tried to unzip
the file, but all i get is a 51 Mb single file... I do not understand what
to do with the .bz2 file to uncompress it into its constituent files?
could you please help me?

This message indicates that you are probably too much of a beginner to be
able to successfully build and install egcs from source. Not to know what
a compressed tar file is suggests that you're going to have too many
things you can't cope with. Perhaps you should attempt to find a prebuilt
set of binaries for your platform. What OS are you running?
