An outsider here with a question ... After the GCC 3.0 release, I heard
all sorts of horror stories about generated code ballooning in size and
execution time compared to 2.95.3. How much improved is 3.0.4 in this
respect, if I'm not a C++ developer and I just want to use the new GCC
for everyday compiling (kernel, etc.)? I see that 3.1 is nearing release
... how much better is that going to be?

If I want to try 3.0.4 on my Red Hat 7.2 system, are there any pointers
for installing it alongside 2.95.3, just for tinkering?
