Strange. 1/2 :-) Sorry, you misread what I said, this assignment had nothing whatsoever to do with the GCC MMIX port. The students wrote complete compilers that parsed Algol-68 source, semantically analyzed the resulting trees, and then generated optimized (more or less, some optimized more than others :-) assembly language for MMIX.
