A paper describing them is available as http://people.debian.org/~karlheg/Usenix88-lexic.pdf. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ is broken. I am not able to access the document.
