A simple question, with NO probably as the answer.
Ive scanned the g77 manual, but dont see anything that would be
equivalent to -r8 on the Sun (and other) Fortran compilers.
Is there such an option?
[[ for reference -r8 bumps single precision to 64 bits, double to 128 ]]

As you surmised, no. GNU Fortran 95 (g95) will support this, but that
compiler isn't even close to release yet.
