It isn't better.
The installation path is meant to be pretty freely alterable by the
installer. (It isn't at the moment, but that's another issue.) Adding
a hook to the installation-path part of the code to 'remangle' it for
the particular system (with the remangling being decided by 'configure')
would be a worthwhile improvement. :-)
