With the attached patch the branch bootstraps again on x86, amd64 and
alpha.  We cannot bootstrap on ppc and ia64 for unrelated problems.

I have partially fixed the ia64 failure, but it requires an API change
that affects PRE.  I've asked Dan to help me with that, so I expect to
fix it soonish.

I've only today discovered the ppc failure.  It seems to have been
happening for a couple of days.  I'll try to see what's going on there
tomorrow.

The branch is open once more.

I could bootstrap yesterday around 6:00 PST (west coast) on 
powerpc-apple-darwin7.0.0.
