Has been solved somewhere and I can't find it in the archives?

If not, then:  yes, I deleted it because I was told automake was working
around these issues.  That seems not to be the case, so we need to do it
ourselves again.  There's a patched configure[*] here:

    http://www.devphil.com/~pme/configure.bz2

Please tell me if that helps at all.


[*] Two Point One Freaking Megs of very repetitive shell script, before
    compression.

For the record from IRC discussion: the unsharing of config.cache
between different libs within a multilib may have hidden the problem,
but I'm pretty sure it hasn't been fixed.
