Dear GCC,

I built gcc-3.3.2 on a Dell Latitude i686-pc-linux (from config.guess) with
dual boot Win2K/RedHat 6.2, kernel 2.2.16, with binutils 2.9.5, glibc 2.1.3.

Your instructions say not to install to /usr/local if I have a previous
version of gcc. If I just say

make install --prefix /usr/local/gcc-3.3.2

will that do the trick?

I passed no arguments to configure.

I think I mailed you the test_summary output but I'm not sure the script
worked. The first time it ran it couldn't find srcdir/LAST_INSTALL. I ran
it again and it ran suspiciously fast, so I ran it again sending the output
to myself and didn't receive anything.

Thanks in advance for advice on installing.

Best regards,

David Gillman

Yes.

I am not sure what part of the documentation you are referring to
though. I don't recall any part that recommends against installing in
/usr/local.

It is possible to install multiple compiler versions in /usr/local. You
have to fix a few things by hand, for instance, renaming one of the gcc
drivers to avoid a conflict. It is simpler to install different
compiler versions in different directories though.

You might consider reporting a bug into bugzilla. See
	http://gcc.gnu.org/bugs.html
We would need enough info to reproduce the problem, which might be an
issue in this case. If you don't know what is wrong with the script,
then we won't be able to fix it.

Thanks, I've updated this entry in the GCC 3.0 build status page at
http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-3.0/buildstat.html.

Successful build and install of GCC 3.0.3.
This is identical to my existing entry in the build status page barring
only that I have since added c++ to the build.

Cygwin-1.3.6-6 on WinXP Pro

$ ./config.guess
i686-pc-cygwin

$ new-gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-cygwin/3.0.3/specs
Configured with: ./configure --verbose --enable-threads=win32
--with-system-zlib --disable-nls --disable-shared --enable-static
--with-gnu-as --with-gnu-ld --program-prefix=new-
--enable-languages=c,c++ --disable-libgcj --disable-checking
--enable-sjlj-exceptions --host=i686-pc-cygwin --enable-haifa
Thread model: win32
gcc version 3.0.3

(Built using 3.0.3 itself)

CFLAGS = -O3 -fomit-frame-pointer -mcpu=athlon -funroll-loops
-ffast-math -fexpensive-optimizations

Stephano Mariani

PS: The --program-prefix=new- seemed to have no effect... I have to
manually rename the binaries in /usr/local/bin.
