I successfully built and installed egcs-1.0.1 on i586-pc-linux-gnulibc1
(SuSe Linux 2.0.32) .

Well, actually we did warn you, and we also provided the bootstrap-lean
target which doesn't need as much space.  From the INSTALL/BUILD file:

   If you are short on disk space you might consider "make
   bootstrap-lean" instead. This is identical to "make bootstrap" except
   that object files from the stage1 and stage2 of the 3-stage bootstrap
   of the compiler are deleted as soon as they are no longer needed.

egc-1.0.1 on i686-pc-linux-gnulibc1 SMP

I just want to underline the fact that you should warn people about the
free disk space needed (or just make a check at the begining of the 
make boostrap... ) I compiled as root in the /root directory which is 
on a small 150 megs partition and that was rather just !!!
