I don't think this is really a bug, but it IS strange.  Why would gcc
and g++ respond differently?

telomere:~> gcc --help
gcc: No input files

telomere:~> g++ --help
/usr/lib/crt1.o(.text+0x36): undefined reference to `main'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
