what is it with the crappy logo of the bull and egg, i mean, really, 
the GCC home page is embarrassing to say  the least in a design sense

:-p Well, I quite like it. I think the logo is simple, effective and cleanly
done. It's a cut above a lot of logos you see on the internet. The egg is a
reference to the egcs project in GCC's history.

Similarly the site: it's simple, effective and usable. What's your
complaint? Did you have a problem finding some information you needed?

And you're on very dangerous ground: IIRC the logo was drawn by somebody
important's wife.


Now feel free to post something useful if you'd like to help develop GCC.
Else go troll slashdot or something.

No no, who cares if he found what he needs.  We need to address this
logo issue immediately, since we all know that in gcc development,
our logo is the most important thing anyway.

I think we need a team banner too, to help improve quality and
productivity.

What about a retreat with team building exercises?

We can all stand in a line and each fall blindly into the arms
of the person behind them.

Doesn't that introduce an extra bootstrap requirement?  We'd need to
figure out a way to catch the last guy.  Or is it okay to assume that
"Everyone has a working catcher, even if it isn't a GCC contributor"?

Since GCC has an exception handler now it can take care of 'catch'ing
the last person in line. :-)

David Miller's wife Nina created the egcs (which some people pronounced
"eggs" for short) logo.  I suggested the design:

I certainly won't dispute that presentation/navigation can be improved,
but this is volunteer project, and my personal order of preferences for
the web site is (roughly) the following:

 1. availability (Do the site and updates work at all?)
 2. correctness (of information provided)
 3. accessibility and basic usability (Is the site useable for all users,
    including the handicapped and users with non-mainstream systems? Is
    the desired information easy to find and use?)
 4. completeness (of information provided)
 5. design in the more graphical sense

On my personal schedule, reviewing and shepherding patches and trying to
honor suggestions hovers around 2-3 in the list above and also Janis (the
second web pages maintainer) tries to handle patches quickly, so don't
hesitate and contribute! :-)

My two cents:
The logo is fine.  I just wish it weren't a low-quality JPEG.  An 8-bit PNG
would look better and would be about the same file size.

Agreed. The artifacting burns my eyes. I'd much rather see an 8-bit PNG
version. It would be small, but more importantly, it would make a stronger
statement against GIFs. (http://burnallgifs.org/)

I traced the original image and made a fresh, extremely high resolution
copy.  Here's an 8-bit PNG roughly the same dimensions as the current image.
