I strongly agree with Jeff.

Weren't there some complaints a while back about egcs build
overwriting things (like the texi to info tools)?  

The default should be a safe default.  That's especially true for beta
software, but even beyond that.  (Just because beta is finished
doesn't mean the bugs are all gone.)

In production environments, people *don't* just plunk a new tool over
an older one just because it was released...
