FYI: I've just successfully installed EGCS 1.0.2 on an Intel based
Solaris 2.6 system. The output of the config.guess is:
i386-pc-solaris2.6.

Thanks!

The egcs project

In case you are unaware, I have managed to install egcs 1.1.2 on a Digital alpha
running Digital Unix v4.0e thus:
   #egcs-1.1.2/config.guess
   alphaev5-dec-osf4.0e

Note that in my case, for a successful build, I needed to delete the old
"g++-include" library (gcc 2.7.2.2). This may not be an absolute neccessity but
I am not a qualified programmer and I found that it worked that way ... so I did
it!

Hi Marchelm,

Since it seems you were able to build egcs-1.1.2 on DEC alpha
OSF/1 4.0e, I wanted to ask how you configured it to do so;
i.e.:
 - what compiler on the alpha did you use to build egcs?
 - what compiler flags did you use with that compiler?
 - did you use GNU as and ld, or /usr/ccs/bin{as,ld} on the
alpha?
 - did you pass any flags to 'configure' when you ran it?
The reason I am asking is that I am trying to build egcs 1.1.2
on DEC alpha OSF/1 4.0a, and I keep running into nasty problems
such as ld crashing due to a memory fault. I am wondering what I
am missing in my environment to make this build successfully,
and was hoping you had some info that could help me out.

Thanks for your time and help,

-C.

Hi

In the documentation you state, that I should send you an email, if I
built egcs. So here it is. It seems to run really fine.

I compiled it on a i586-pc-linux-gnu system.

Thank you for providing such a good compiler!

Tobias

Well, the internal representation and a brief high level description
of the compiler can be found in the gcc manual which is installed
in gnu-info form during the install process.

To understand the nuts and bolts you have to actually read the code
though :-)

Hi!

This is just a quick message to say that I've got egcs-19950803 installed
on my machine, a
i686-pc-linux-gnulibc1. I also check the ftp site every so often for new
snapshots. I use it mainly for my own C++ development and I've also
recently compiled the Linux 2.1.115 kernel with it, which *seems* to be
working fine (no crashes as yet).

Also, could anyone give me some pointers to info on some of the internal
workings of the compiler. For the moment, I'm just curious :) But if I know
/how/ the copmiler does things, it will probably help me writing cleaner
code, and it may mean that I contribute some way to the egcs development
(Don't hold me to this, though <grin>).

Hi!

I successfully compiled and installed egcs 1.0 on a RedHat 5.0 system.

The hardware is a Dual PPro 166 w. 128 Megs. I guess compile took around
half an hour (although I didn't time it).

I did a little timing on a molecular dynamics simulation tool, comparing
the performance when compiled with standard GCC and with EGCS.

Options used with GCC:
-m486 -O3 -fexpensive-optimizations -fomit-frame-pointer

Options used with EGCS:
-march=3Di686 -O3 -fexpensive-optimizations -fomit-frame-pointer

I experienced no real speedup, but that was expected since the program is
very memory intensive, so I guess most of the time in the program is spent
waiting on cache-misses. Especially because the program runs on both CPUs.
That really gives the crappy PC memory subsystem something to work with!

Regrettably I do not have time to test egcs on more CPU intensive programs
for the time being.

Virtual beer to the Egcs people! We sure needed a GCC with a pentium
optimizer.
