Over the weekend I thought a bit about this issue, and there might be
an alternate solution:

David, does FreeBSD need a "full-blown" GCC 2.95.4 release, or would some
GCC 2.95.4-20020402 "snapshot" suffice as well?  (We could even put that
on ftp.gnu.org, I suppose.)
