All the documentation I've found on the -frepo option assumes that
you have a bunch of source files which you compile into object
files and then link together into an executable in one step.

I would like to produce some intermediate object files by linking
several object files together (I currently use "ld -r"). Is there
any way for me to get this to work with the -frepo option?

I've already tried to replace my ld with the "collect2" ld. Still
doesn't work.
