There seems to be a lot of errors in this snapshot. I compiled with
egcs-1.1b.

On my Alpha (RH 5.0 Linux), this snapshot didn't even bother building
some libraries, such as libf2c. I haven't had time to investigate
why, yet. And, there were comparison failures in the bootstrap
build as well, in about 7 source files (one in g77). The previous
snapshot was fine in these respects.
I suspect the snapshot includes a misapplied patch or two that
makes it DOA, or nearly so...but if nobody speaks up with
an "aha!", I'll try and look into it later this week. (By "misapplied"
I include partially applied patches as well.)

I can confirm that the current egcs miscompiles libg++ on Linux/x86.
I also saw report that it miscompiled glibc 2.1 on Linux/x86. They
may be related. It will be nice if people run test on libg++ before
they check in changes. I have suggested it many times before. It went
nowhere. The result is everyone wastes time on those bugs which can be
caught by libg++. Should that be a check-in requirement?

No. It should not be a check-in requirement.
If we ever have check-in requirements, they would include either a
bootstrap of the compiler or running the existing testsuite, not
building/testing external code like libg++.

But, I agree with H.J., it would be fine if more people were testing
libg++ from time to time. For instance, the current mainline sources
look pretty much OK without libg++, but with libg++ "make check" fails
for hppa1.1-hp-hpux10.20, m68k-motorola-sysv and m88k-motorola-sysv3.
Perhaps it would also be helpful if we'd extend the test_summary script
to report if "configure"d directories have been found in the tree, but
the particular *.log files are missing. Currently if libg++ fails, no
results are posted for libg++ and nobody knows there's a problem :-(

FWIW, the current egcs in CVS still miscompiles libg++ on
Linux/x86. I may not have time to look into it before the
end of October.

I would not be overly concerned about this right now. We're supposed to be
working on development not stability for the mainline tree right now.
Fixing the bug is important, but not critical at the moment.

Ewww. Bummer.
I just tried a build on a RH5.1 Linux/x86 version on a version patched
up from who-knows-what snapshot of the past and it died during the build
of libf2c. I did a 'make clean-target-libf2c' followed by a 'make
all-target-libf2c' and it passed. I was unable to recreate the failure,
so I'm going to assume (?) that there was some stamp file or something
else left over that confused things when that directory got multilibbed
last week. A 'make check-target-libf2c' seems to work OK, so whatever
the original failure was (it's not in my scrollback) seems to be gone.
If you and the original poster could try this same "fix", that might
be an easy out...

If it simplifies things, you can blame me for mangling the Makefiles
until a more clearly identifiable culprit steps forward. :-)
