<official_blurb>

The GCC Steering Committee has named Gabriel Dos Reis as release manager for
the upcoming GCC 3.2.2 release, allowing Mark Mitchell to focus his
efforts on the GCC 3.3 and 3.4 releases. 3.2.2 is intended to be a bug
fix release only.

</official_blurb>

Gaby is away at a conference this week and has only limited Internet
connectivity, so it won't be until early next week that he will be able
to devote a lot of time to it. Accordingly, Mark is in charge of the
3_2_branch until then, at which point Gaby will take over.

There isn't a schedule yet; it is up to Gaby to decide.

Hi,

Thanks for approving my coordinating the efforts to get 3.2.2 out.
I'll try not to break the world.

| Gaby is away at a conference this week and has only limited Internet

Well, I'd propose the following:

   o I would like to make a pre-release tarball on 2003-01-29.

o We will have one week testing, i.e. from 2003-01-29 til 2003-02-04.

o If no critical regression shows up, then we can do a release on
      2003-02-05.

Comments?

-- Gaby

One question is what the policy should be on adding anything else to
the 3.2 branch in the meantime. My suggestion (and it's only a
suggestion) is to do something like this:

- allow fixes to problems in the 3.2 branch that don't appear in 3.2.1
(idea: no new failures in 3.2.2 that aren't in 3.2.1, but no effort
to fix problems that have been around for a while that haven't already
  been fixed)

- otherwise, a fix would have to have a very strong justification, it
would fix some other regression, be important to multiple users or
fix a bug in some significant free software package, and be low risk
(Gaby would have to approve on such things)

I only know of one fix that might fall into the second category: Toon has
been asking for the following fix (approved by Richard) to be applied to
the 3.2 branch:

http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/2003-01/msg00689.html

The deadline for adding changes would have to be at least a day, maybe
two, before Gaby makes the tarball, to reduce the chance of a last-minute
botch.

| One question is what the policy should be on adding anything else to
| the 3.2 branch in the meantime.

I see no compeling reason to change the policy that has been in effect
since GCC-3.1 dot releases, which more or less is what you outlined in
your message.

Yes, this corresponds to the regression fixes with respect to previous
(here specifically 3.2.x) releases policy.

| - otherwise, a fix would have to have a very strong justification, it
| would fix some other regression, be important to multiple users or

Right. However, I would suggest such change not to be made 2 days
before the planed release date, to allow testing.

Mark --
Since this patch has been approved by RTH, I would recommand it for
3.2 branch.

Thanks,

It's your call! I'm going to stay out of there; I'm really glad you're
doing it. I'm trying to summon the courage to announce dates for the
3.3 release and 3.4 conversion to stage 2...

Dude, this sounds like a fine plan.

Because you are now RM, you get to apply patches as you see fit.

This patch seems obvious:
http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/2003-01/msg00689.html

There are already a large number of patches on the 3_2-branch, as Joe
Buck's release notes indicate.
