While building egcs-970828 I noticed that "true" is used in
place of "ranlib" although configure found ranlib. Is this "normal" ?

It's system dependent -- some systems don't need ranlib; I don't
know if solaris is one of them.

Yup, ranlib is unnecessary on Solaris 2.5, since ar takes care of
updating the library symbol table.
