Apparently, 'as' on IRIX 6.2 on a R4000 machine does not
handle the long names produced by egcs-1.1b. Is there
some way to build egcs so that -fsquangle is the default?

Yes. This has been posted to the list several times in the last few
weeks; you should be able to find a one-line patch in the archives.
You just have to initialize the squangle flag to 1, instead of the
default zero.
