The trigger was the last patch, which is to fix a bug where the pretty-printer was not called for components of record types. But the motivation was there even before then. Long term, I'd love to get rid of val_print, and only keep value_print. This would help with partially-available values. But val_print and value_print have subtle differences, so I'll leave that for later. The patch series has been tested on x86_64-linux.
