Guess that means '--readnever --readnow' is the same as
--readnever in practice?

Maybe use build_executable.

Nowadays we have save_vars:

save_vars { GDBFLAGS } {
  append GDBFLAGS " --readnever"
  clean_restart ${binfile}
}
