Please use a temporary variable, something like:
kind = inferior_thread ()->pending_follow.kind
gdb_assert (kind == TARGET_WAITKIND_FORKED)
|| (kind == TARGET_WAITKIND_VFORKED));
Makes it easier to debug a core dump caused by this assert.
