Hi Brendan,

TLDR: I think most of the tests don't run properly on the MIPS build
slaves, check gdb.log for "Cannot exec".

Long version:

I am trying to clear an unexpected pass in mi-watch.exp (the test
expects gdb to fail, but it seems to work fine). git tells me the
xfail was added by commit 4a543da in 2007 and that it was added with
the MIPS platform in mind:
https://www.sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2007-09/msg00151.html

I would therefore like to see if the test passes correctly on the MIPS
platform today before removing the xfail. Unfortunately, the test
doesn't run on the buildbot.

You can check the gdb.log here, search for mi-watch.exp (warning,
that's a very big file):
http://gdb-build.sergiodj.net/cgit/Debian-MIPS-m64/.git/plain/gdb.log

Here is the important snippet (with messed up formatting since I'm
using gmail, sorry):

220-exec-run
&"Cannot exec /mips/proj/build-compiler/upstream-testing/mipsswbrd048/GDB-testing/debian-mips-m64/build/gdb/testsuite/outputs/gdb.mi/mi-watch/mi-watch
-c exec /mips/proj/build-compiler/upstream-testing/mipsswbrd048/GDB-testing/debian-mips-m64/build/gdb/testsuite/outputs/gdb.mi/mi-watch/mi-watch
.\n"
&"Error: No such file or directory\n"
=thread-group-started,id="i1",pid="30605"
=thread-created,id="1",group-id="i1"
=thread-exited,id="1",group-id="i1"
=thread-group-exited,id="i1"
220^error,msg="During startup program exited with code 127."
(gdb)
ERROR: Unable to start target

There are many other tests that have the same problem, which is why I
suspect that the tests don't run as they should.

Simon,

If I'm reading this right, it looks like it's trying to exec a file that
doesn't exist. I think it's trying to exec:
/mips/proj/build-compiler/upstream-testing/mipsswbrd048/GDB-testing/debian-mips-m64/build/gdb/testsuite/outputs/gdb.mi/mi-watch/mi-watch

In fact, I'm not seeing any of the sub-directories either. The first
directory I'm seeing is:
/mips/proj/build-compiler/upstream-testing/mipsswbrd048/GDB-testing/debian-mips-m64/build/gdb/testsuite/

If it helps, here's the contents of that directory:

This file should exist, because it was correctly compiled before during
the testcase run:

Executing on host: gcc ../../../binutils-gdb/gdb/testsuite/gdb.mi/basics.c -g -lm -o /mips/proj/build-compiler/upstream-testing/mipsswbrd048/GDB-testing/debian-mips-m64/build/gdb/testsuite/outputs/gdb.mi/mi-watch/mi-watch (timeout = 300)
spawn gcc ../../../binutils-gdb/gdb/testsuite/gdb.mi/basics.c -g -lm -o /mips/proj/build-compiler/upstream-testing/mipsswbrd048/GDB-testing/debian-mips-m64/build/gdb/testsuite/outputs/gdb.mi/mi-watch/mi-watch

The debian-mips-m64 directory gets removed on every build, so depending
on when you examine it you won't find the testsuite results there.

My first advice would be to replicate what the BuildBot does to compile
GDB, but on a temporary directory outside the buildslave's dir (so that
you won't affect existing builds). Feel free to stop your buildslave
while doing the steps below, if you are afraid it's going to be too much
for the poor hardware.

For example, you can do:

  ../binutils-gdb/configure --disable-binutils --disable-ld --disable-gold \
   --disable-gas --disable-sim --disable-gprof --enable-targets=all --with-separate-debug-dir=/usr/lib/debug
  make -j1 all
make -k check -j1 FORCE_PARALLEL=1 # see below before typing this

Running the entire testsuite may be too much, so you can run only one
test by doing:

  make check RUNTESTFLAGS='gdb.mi/mi-watch.exp'

That should give you/us some clues about what's going on.

Thanks,

I ran the steps below. The build was successful. I built with commit
7ac018954bd9 because the latest one was failing to build. However, I'm
still not seeing this file. I've attached the output of running "make
check RUNTESTFLAGS='gdb.mi/mi-watch.exp'" in the file
gdb.mi-mi-watch.exp.out and I've attached the gdb/testsuite/gdb.log file
in gdb.mi-mi-watch.exp.log. Let me know if you want me to try
anything else.

Thanks for trying that.

Looking at the error message (any of them), the pattern is:

  Cannot exec $execfile -c exec $execfile

This looks awfully as if it should be

  $SHELL -c exec $execfile

but that somehow the exec-file name ended up in place of the shell. That
command line seems to be constructed in fork-child.c:fork_inferior, but I
don't see how it could end up like that.

It's probably not related, but let's rule out obvious things. I notice that
the SHELL of the user running the buildbot slave is be /sbin/nologin (from
an output of show env in gdb.log). It seems to be a problem for some tests
that use the shell command at least (search for nologin in the log). Setting
the shell of the user to a real shell will help for those.

When you ran the make check RUNTESTFLAGS="..." command that Sergio asked you
to run, was it as the same user as the buildbot slave's user? I assume not,
since the shell is nologin. Would it be possible to try it again, but this
time as that user?

Simon

Sorry, my bad. The outputs/ directory will only be created/used when
you set the FORCE_PARALLEL=1 variable. Could you please try running
the same command that the BuildBot runs?

  make -k check -j1 FORCE_PARALLEL=1

And seeing if there's anything strange happening?

Thanks,

The Buildbot user has SHELL set to /bin/nologin to avoid giving the user
SSH access. I'll change the SHELL environment variable to /bin/bash
when I start the Buildbot slave to avoid breaking the testing.

When I rebuilt this morning, I was running as the same user as the
Buildbot uses. Also, I had SHELL set to /bin/bash. I've just re-run
the build with SHELL explicitly set on the make command like:
make -j1 all SHELL=/bin/bash
make check RUNTESTFLAGS='gdb.mi/mi-watch.exp' SHELL=/bin/bash

I'm not seeing the messages:

Cannot exec $execfile -c exec $execfile

in any of the logs ("grep -i 'cannot.*exec' *" returns nothing). I'm
attaching the build log from the above "make -j1 all SHELL=/bin/bash"
command above as build.log as well as the newer versions of the make
check and gdb.log logs.

Brendan

Those logs seems fine. Try to run what Sergio suggested, which is a bit
closer to what the buildbot really runs.

Thanks,

Yeah, I think Simon hit the nail about the problem: if $SHELL is nologin
GDB will get confused about things. In this case, the easier solution
is to use /bin/{,ba}sh as the buildslave user's shell. Can you do that?
You can still edit you /etc/ssh/sshd_config and disallow the buildslave
there.

Thanks,

As I mentioned before, I've already made this change and restarted the
build slave. I'm seeing SHELL=/bin/bash in the environment for steps in
the currently running build. Let me know if this fixes things.

Sorry, I missed that message. Anyway, now the build is broken for MIPS,
so it's not reaching the testscase part. Let's wait until it gets
fixed.

Cheers,

All I changed was SHELL is now set to /bin/bash. It might be good to
note that when setting up new Buildbot slaves.

Did you have to change the default shell for the user (in /etc/passwd) or
did you simply override the SHELL variable at some point when launching the
slave?

I overrode the SHELL variable in the Buildbot systemd service I wrote to
start it.

Ok thanks, I added a little warning in the wiki:

/!\ It has been reported that the tests won't run properly if the SHELL variable is not
set to a valid shell (e.g. /sbin/nologin instead of /bin/bash). Make sure that the
user running the buildslave has a valid shell or override the SHELL environment
    variable somehow.

You always need a valid SHELL set. Not just for the testsuite, but
for gdb itself: gdb starts programs with the shell for
argument globbing, variable expansion ("run *", "run $foo", etc), and
redirection ("run 1>foo.txt", etc.), unless you disable all that
with "set startup-with-shell off".

 $ SHELL=/foo gdb /usr/bin/sleep
 ...
 (gdb) r
 Starting program: /usr/bin/sleep
 Cannot exec /usr/bin/sleep -c exec /usr/bin/sleep .
Error: No such file or directory
During startup program exited with code 127.
 (gdb)

As you found, that's a bogus error message. It should have been:

 (gdb) r
 Starting program: /usr/bin/sleep
 Cannot exec /foo -c exec /usr/bin/sleep .
Error: No such file or directory
During startup program exited with code 127.
 (gdb)

This patchlet fixes that:
