This is a series I originally sent in 2013 (I think) but didn't check
in.  I've rebased it and made a few changes.

The first patch is the real change.  Please read it carefully, and
read the text as well -- the correct course here wasn't entirely clear
to me, and perhaps something else should be done.

Regression tested by the buildbot.  Though, as is often the case, it's
hard to be sure that everything relevant is really tested.
