What's the ETA on a fix? I know how to fix OpenOCD, but I wouldn't
know where to start
to fix GDB.

It's a GDB bug. When someone has time to work on it, we'll fix it in
GDB. I would call that breaking OpenOCD, not fixing it.

GDB is figuring out if there is another stack frame past the top of
your stack. If you'd given it the right values, you'd have gotten
another frame in the backtrace.

The problem on my system appears to be that corefile/read_memory()
calls error(). This will
cause unwinding of stack to fail.
I have no idea how information about a failed memory read should
perculate back up to
the stack unwinding code...
dwarf2-frame.c/dwarf2_frame_prev_register() returns void...
modifying corefile/read_memory() not to invoke memory_error() solves
the problem on my rocket,
i.e. GDB seems to have pretty good code to reject invalid values from
read_memory().
I would suspect most JTAG/hardware debuggers would simply lie and
return garbage values and
not fail the memory read request....
Is it realistic to have this fixed in GDB or should hardware debuggers
simply return a garbage value
(0xfffff...?) and let the target memory read succeed? Fixing OpenOCD
wouldn't be hard.
The *really* interesting bit is that GDB actually manages to figure
out the stack depth when I simply
removed memory_error() from corefile.c/read_memory(), i.e. GDB fails
to read some value it does not
actually need to evaluate the stack frames! :-)

This would not be an unusual condition. Especially when debugging interrupt=
s and
such.
Is the current behaviour of GDB intentional?
I would have expected stack-info-depth to return the maximum examinable
depth + possibly a warning.
