Bug #: 13828
Summary: Incorrect instructions in gdbserver README
Product: gdb
Version: HEAD
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: gdb
AssignedTo: unassigned@sourceware.org
ReportedBy: richaw@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
The gdbserver README (../gdb/gdbserver/README) states
If you prefer to cross-compile to your target, then you can also build
GDBserver that way. In a Bourne shell, for example:
% export CC=your-cross-compiler
% path-to-gdbserver-sources/configure your-target-name
% make
It should probably say
% path-to-gdbserver-sources/configure --host your-target-name

That actually seems to still work.
$ ../src/gdb/gdbserver/configure foo-foo-foo

Leaving out --host does not work for cross-compiling:
rw@seven /cygdrive/c/Downloads/gnu/gdb_git/gdb/gdb/gdbserver
$ ./configure arm-unknown-linux
configure: WARNING: you should use --build, --host, --target
checking for arm-unknown-linux-gcc...
/opt/crosstool/gcc-3.3.4-glibc-2.3.2/arm-unknown-linux-gnu/bin/arm-unknown-linux-gnu-gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name... a.out
checking whether the C compiler works... configure: error: in
`/cygdrive/c/Downloads/gnu/gdb_git/gdb/gdb/gdbserver':
configure: error: cannot run C compiled programs.
If you meant to cross compile, use `--host'.
See `config.log' for more details.

Aha. We should really fix the docs then. Thanks.
