There is already a generic error message: warning: A handler for the OS ABI "Darwin" is not built into this configuration of GDB. Attempting to continue with the default i386:x86-64 settings. Not very user friendly, I agree. IMHO, this is an issue for fink maintainers, most final users don't compiler gdb themselves. Might be interesting to understand how ELF handles that.
