There is a simpler way for me to replicate this:
1) start
2) interrupt
3) catch throw (terminates)

In ~/.gdbinit I have:

set auto-solib-add off
define hookpost-start
  sharedlibrary x.so
  ...
  continue
end

ie. I only load a small subset of libs for speed.
