(gdb) watch v
Hardware watchpoint 2: v
(gdb) delete 2
(gdb) watch -location v
Watchpoint 3: -location v
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
(gdb) p sizeof (v)
$1 = 24

And it really singlesteps after 'continue'.
